Colombian Artist Doris Salcedo Presents 30 Years of Artwork at Pérez Art Museum Miami.
April 1, 2016
Beginning April 22 through July 17, 2016, Pérez Art Museum Miami will presentDoris Salcedo, an exhibition showcasing 30 years of sculpture and installation by the Bogotá-based artist. This exhibition brings together the largest presentation of Salcedo’s work to date. It follows a loosely chronological trajectory, highlighting works ranging from the skeletal frames of hospital cots in her early Untitled works (1989–90/2013) to her newest series, Disremembered (2014), garments woven from silk thread and needle. It also features large-scale installations including the labyrinthine arrangement of tables,Plegaria Muda (2008–10), which seeks to affirm the possibility of life even in difficult circumstances, and A Flor de Piel (2014), a memorializing work made from hundreds of thousands of rose petals that have been stitched together by hand.
Salcedo’s work is deeply rooted in her country’s social and political landscape, including its long history of civil conflicts. Her sculptures and installations address these fraught circumstances with elegance and a poetic sensibility that balances the gravitas of her subjects with subtle formality. Rather than making literal representations of violence or trauma, Salcedo’s artworks convey a sense of an absent, missing body and evoke a collective sense of loss. The resulting pieces engage with multiple dualities at once—strength and fragility, the ephemeral and the enduring—and bear elements of healing and reparation in the careful, laborious process of their making.
Salcedo grounds her art in rigorous fieldwork, which involves extensive interviews with people who have experienced loss and trauma in their everyday lives. This process imbues her work with an intimate connection to the personal that speaks to collective experiences and universal emotions. In more recent years, Salcedo has created large-scale, site-specific installations around the world, including in Turkey, Italy, England, and her native Colombia.
